The Hair Loss Pill Actually Prevents You From Losing You Hair

If you consumed a hair loss pill everyday you would be almost assured of keeping a full crown of hair. The pill is called propecia, and it is a product of scientific serendipity, which is another way of saying that it is a lucky, accidental consequence.

Over 20 years ago, Merck Pharmaceuticals released a drug called proscar to the market place. Proscar was accredited for the treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia. The active ingredient in proscar is 5mg of finasteride. The pill was taken daily by a group of men that were over 60 years, and who were afflicted with the condition, BPH. Finasteride was not only discovered to prevent the formation of prostate cancer, but was also found to encourage hair growth, and so the hair loss pill was born. Further testing by Merck has proven that the lowest effective quantity of finasteride was 1mg.

Altogether, a two year test conducted on almost two thousand subjects showed that over eighty percent of them maintained, or in fact, increased their hair mass from the hairline. This one of a kind experiment started more than ten years ago, and it was found that the initial test subjects actually maintained those great results for 4 years after the trial had finished. The 1mg of finasteride was marketed under the brand name, Propecia.

An added consequence of taking propecia, is that it changes the levels of testosterone in the body, and hence is available only on prescription. The advice of a physician should be sought and the prescribed dosage followed explicitly. Hormonal balances can be fragile and maintaining a regular dose helps to ensure stability.

The loss of hair might not be an indication that you should start taking the hair loss pill right away. There is a natural three phase process of hair loss and renewal that occasionally, can be literally stunned into a premature hair loss stage. This apparently spontaneous shedding, also called Telegen Effluvium, is not a permanent condition and usually results in replacement hair growth.

Propecia treatment is an extremely gradual procedure and needs patience on the part of the user. One should not count on results for about three months, with typical regrowth not appearing until the 8th month. Optimum results do not appear until at least a year after the beginning of the treatment.
